Wishing you warmth in whatever way you are choosing to celebrate this year. In a year of unmeasurable hardship, uprising and uncertainty - it has been a special privilege to witness the depth of healing in our sessions and a collective movement towards liberation in our personal and community suffering. Thank you for gifting me these moments of calm and presence in an otherwise enduring time. The link below is my solstice newsletter with a digital care pack for some holiday comfort. Take good care!
Community Wellness Library Project
Update** The library functioned for 5 months before being shut down from complaints. Thank you to everyone who supported this project. if you would like to donate to the health access fund to support community memembers in accessing acupuncture please be in touch.
As a health care practitioner I am always thinking about ways to make health care accessible to all community members. I am often considering the intersections of who does or does not access care and why. The opioid crisis, covid pandemic and ongoing injustices within Black and Indigenous communities across Turtle Island have highlighted many social disparities. Specifically financial, food and health inequity that I believe we can start to address at a community level.
In response, I am piloting a free community supported wellness library outside my practice at 1921 Fernwood Road. It will function similar to the free book libraries around town. A self standing, unattended structure, where folks can donate and/or receive free wellness supplies such as: herbal medicines, fresh & non-perishable foods, vitamins/supplements, zines & wellness literature, plants & seeds, harm reduction supplies, & small tokens of joy.
Knowing that health access is both a structural and community centred problem, intersecting with trauma, racism, poverty, ability, sex, class and existing health status, at least half of the shelves will be reserved specifically for BIPOC & underserved folks in our community.
Having a self serve access point allows people to access free support, on their own terms, no questions asked, or uncomfortable spaces to navigate. Removing both financial and social barriers to meeting their needs. It also allows community members to make contributions as they see fit.
Who Is This For?
Anyone and everyone is welcome to access free supplies at any time that suits them. While we establish steady contribution streams I ask that if you have financial means to please make a donation back (either add an item to the library or make a financial donation here) in a spirit of reciprocity, so that we can keep a healthy stock for those who cannot pay at this time. The goal is to establish enough streams (through business & individual donations) to make it sustainably free for all.
How It works
Take a product leave a product
Take a product and donate here
Access for free when in need and know that the community is here to support you
Make a donation or become a monthly donor of medicines/supplies/food/money
**Guidelines for Donating Products : Please only donate un-opened products in original packaging. If you are a medicine maker and/or DIY contributor please make sure ingredients and directions for use are well marked and “self seal” with tape or similar.
What Is In The Wellness Library?
Fresh or dried medicinal and culinary herbs
Individually sealed herbal tea bags, boxes of tea
Tinctures & oxymels (nervous system support, immune, heart & grief support especially needed at this time)
Body care supplies
Harm reduction supplies & naloxone kits
Herbal salves, creams, lotions, oils
Fresh & non perishable foods, bottled water and hydration
Zines and small print literature (no books please)
Seeds and plant starts, cuttings and grafts
Small tokens of joy - pins, stickers, poems, candles, diy arts & crafts
Values
This project is started with these values in mind and hopes to promote awareness and contemplation of how we as individuals can build a kinder world.
Mutual Aid & Community Care
Healing Justice
Harm Reduction
Building Health Sovereignty
Human Centred Capitalism
Long Term Goals
To establish steady donation and user streams, building flourishing and resilient community care and mutual aid networks.
To prioritize the voices, medicines and services of BIPOC medicine makers & healers in our community. To establish monthly donation streams to pay medicine makers for contributions and highlight their businesses/services.
To apply food recovery models to glean health products from commercial businesses in our community, reallocating care supplies and reducing product waste.
To inspire other communities to establish similar initiatives. Expanding the many free libraries to include food and medicines for their people.
Financial Accessibility Options for Acupuncture During Covid
As we know, the pandemic has changed a lot of realities for people in Victoria. Some people are working less or out of work, still recovering from living off CERB, or struggling with their small businesses. With the high cost of living in Victoria, even before the pandemic many folks simply stop coming for acupuncture once their benefits are used up.
Acupuncture works best with consistency - in China where acupuncture originates - acupuncture is often given as a prescription once a day for 7-10 days and then reassessed by the doctor. While this may seem inaccessible to many, even before the pandemic, it does illustrate the importance of maintaining frequency until symptoms are resolved.
Due to the pandemic closure and reduced working hours, I have had to pause my sliding scale offering. While I still received many requests for the waitlist, I wanted to share a few options for how to keep accessing acupuncture while we navigate these times.
MSP supplementary benefits - Since MSP premiums were discontinued you now have to apply to receive supplementary benefits. This entitles you be reimbursed $23 per session for up to 10 sessions or acupuncture. If your annual income is less that $42K after taxes - which will be a lot of people this year - you can apply here.
Community Acupuncture - Community acupuncture models can reduce their fees to $35-$55 by treating folks in group (but socially distanced) settings with shorter intakes. Many studios including Heart & Hands can direct bill MSP for you.
Blended Treatment Plans - For some on limited incomes is blending treatment plans with private and community acupuncture can be a good way to balance the financial strain of consistency. For example - alternating weekly sessions or bi weekly sessions.
Access fund - If you have the means, donating to the health access fund allows me to subsidize or provide fee treatments to folks who are historically underserved. BIPOC, LGBTQ2+, those living in poverty, with diverse-ability, chronic illness and frontline folks working to advocate for healing justice. You can send me an e-transfer or donate through PayPal here. If you would like to be considered as a candidate for the access fund please send me an email.
Living With The Seasons
A pillar of wellness in Traditional East Asian Medicine is living in harmony with the seasons and seasonal eating. When we are living slowly and intentionally we can notice subtle shifts in the environment & body and act accordingly. We can begin to notice that the natural world provides the support we need, exactly when we need it . The fruits that ripen this time of year - figs, pears, apples and stone fruits such as peaches and plums - all benefit the spleen & stomach - organs of the late summer season - that govern proper digestion, nutrient absorption and blood production. They also moisten the lung and large intestine - organs of the fall season, that govern immune function and waste elimination - preparing the body for the seasonal change. We are also seeing more mushrooms pop up in the forests right now with the start of the rains. Mushrooms help to boost the immune system, gently detox and support the body through the climactic shifts.
A Case for Adaptation and Pain
Note to reader: the language in this article assumes some working knowledge of Chinese medicine theories, and in particular Kiiko Matsumoto Style acupuncture. For the benefit of the non-practitioner reader, footnotes with explanations are included.
I recently treated a client suffering from acute back pain. It started in the mid back, wrapping around and down the back of the ribs. His doctor had diagnosed him with disc degeneration and osteoarthritis in the spine. After discussing, I left the room for him to change and get comfortable on the table. I was surprised to find that when I came back into the room, he was lying face down, ready for needles in the back. Makes sense I suppose. We often think if something hurts, the pain is the problem to be fixed. With KMS (Kiiko Matsumoto Style) acupuncture however, we are not just seeking to treat the discomfort; we are looking for the adaptation. The problem to solve is not the pain itself, but rather understanding how the pain is useful for the given situation, and trying to create a new situation where it is no longer “helpful” or needed. I asked him to turn over so I could feel his abdomen, the starting diagnostic point for every treatment in KMS style. I hoped the abdomen could help lead me to the why.
The abdomen showed me a hyper-vigilance in the autonomic nervous system--common with acute and chronic pain. Oketsu1 sign was present (lower left abdomen) - likely from constipation caused by pain meds. Immune2 reflex was tight (lower right abdomen), there is a global pandemic after all. And the ASIS was painful (front of the hip), ipsilateral to the back pain. There is a history of lower lumbar spine injury and surgery, and resulting sciatica. So we knew the hips were already myofascially3 involved.
The recent back issue was coming from calcification in the spinal disc and inflamed arthritis in the mid thoracic spine. My feeling was that the mid thoracic spine was taking a lot of compensation from the old lumbar injury. The spine could literally not hold itself up anymore. At least not without help. So the erector spinae muscle group (the spine stabilizers) took over to do its job. The erectors were the ones in spasm and causing the pain. After all, they were doing a lot of work to keep him upright. We found the adaptation. Now if I were to take the adaptation away, treat the pain of the spasming erectors - the weight of the body would fall back on the arthritic spine - so here we see the pain is very helpful!
This is where I make a case against IMS (intramuscular stimulation)4. Assuming that all pain and muscle/fascia tension is something to be needled away for instant results is in some way assuming that the body is not the intelligent sophisticatedly evolved organism that it is. The pain of the erectors was not the issue. It was the adaptation, the down-river effect, trying to modify a system around the original injury. Without treating the inflammation of the spine, the erectors might release temporarily while lying down, but as soon as tension was back in the system (from standing up and moving around for example) it would start to spasm again to protect the spine. I see this a lot with IMS--that the pain goes away quite quickly but is back the next day.
The other piece of the puzzle is that our muscles and fascia are neuroceptive - meaning they can sense stress and safety and respond accordingly. Having pain receptors activated sends a high amount of cortisol into the system. This signifies a global stress response that it is not safe for muscles to relax and we should prepare to fight or flee, or commonly, freeze. So then, part of the adaptation is also stress. Needling big muscle groups directly with IMS doesn’t treat global stress in the nervous system. In fact, it can make these neuroceptive tissues feel even more threatened.
Which brings me to part of my treatment philosophy that is not always easy to hear:
Pain is usually a good thing. It's a sign your body is trying to tell you something. Sometimes getting rid of your pain is not the best way to treat the whole body issue. Maybe this brings up bigger cultural issues around how we deal with discomfort, our constant strive for optimal productivity, the notion that a body in pain is something to be fixed and not listened to. Sometimes pain is very important, even necessary. In this case, the pain was essential to keeping his spine upright without causing further damage. His pain was wise.
Pain is always emotional. We can debate the chicken/egg here but the fact is that cortisol from stress increases inflammation which causes pain - pain causes more cortisol which signals stress - and the cycle goes on, no matter which came first. Culturally we are about as good at feeling our feelings as we are with waiting more than a few days for something on the internet to arrive. I don’t want to gender things to much here but I do see a connection clinically with men of the older generations, who were raised to be stoic, having chronic back pain. Just saying.
Healing is a process. The best we can do in a session is create optimal conditions for the adaptation to not be needed anymore and trust that the body is the wisest one to guide the way to safety.
I did not feel like I could treat the pain. I could not in good faith, release the spasming erectors knowing the spine was not ready to take the load. My sense was the body needed more time to find its way back to safety. But I could: help regulate the nervous system cortisol responses (through the kidney/adrenals); do moxa5 on the arthritic discs to bring down the inflammation. Treat the hip and rhomboid imbalances that were caused from of the older lumbar spinal issue, in hopes of restoring some fascial integrity to stabilize the spine. We cleared the Oketsu reflex, hoping for a bowl movement and used Master Naganos old faithful Immune points.
Did it release the erectors? Not really. Did it help the pain? Kind of. And the rest was trusting the body to do its thing.
He came back the next week. Several consecutive days with improved pain and weaning off the pain meds. The erectors were about 70 percent better and a new fascial pattern was emerging. The nervous system was markedly improved on palpation. Most importantly there was a renewed sense of ease - maybe even some trust in the bodies unfolding process of adaptation.
Footnotes
1 - Oketsu: this is a KMS style term, in Chinese medicine loosely analogous to Liver Blood Stagnation. Correlated with a blockage of optimal blood flow, likely somewhere in the abdominal, pelvic or thoracic cavities, potentially related with a congestion in the rectal veins or hepatic portal vein (the main vein taking blood to the liver for processing) but can have full-body effects.
2 - Immune: In Kiiko Style acupuncture, the Immune reflexes are related with the lymphatic system, where most of our immune cells live. It can be more gut-related, as 80% of lymphatic tissue is surrounding the GI tract; or it can be related with an "external invasion", as in bacteria/mold/virus that the system is fighting off.
3 - myo = muscle, fascia = connective tissue, therefore 'myofascial' means relating to the connective tissue surrounding muscle, and the muscles themselves. Fascia forms an interconnected web of tissue which not only keeps our body together, it holds patterns of movement and injury which interact with the ways we feel our bodies. Fascial tension is a key aspect of what changes with acupuncture treatment.
4 - IMS (intramuscular stimulation), aka "dry needling" is a common practice amongst physiotherapists and other health-care practitioners who use "acupuncture needles" to stimulate a twitch-and-release response in local areas of pain. It is generally much deeper, much more localized, induces more sensation, and does not adhere to the principles of Chinese/Japanese acupuncture within which Registered/Licensed Acupuncturists are trained.
5 - Moxa - Short for moxibustion is a practice of burning herbs over acupuncture points or the surface of the skin to promote blood flow to the area and reduce inflammation.

Thoughts on Deepening our Relational Capacities in the Midst of Social Movements
To engage in social movements, activism or frontline work is to engage directly with the injustices of this world. To witness, participate, and to support each other during these painful times is a heroic act of nervous system disregulation. What we sacrifice and endure to be a part of justice moments needs to be held carefully and collectively. Restoring our capacity for relational connection — with ourselves and others — can be a potent resource for building resiliency in our movements for a more just world.
From a neurophysiology view, exposure to sensory information like injustice & harm doing, can shift our neuroception (nervous systems assessment of safety) out of social engagement and relational capacities (right brain, ventral vagal states), and into orienting and survival responses (left brain processing & dorsal vagal states). We may start to find that with our attunement and co-regulation abilities switched off (ability to connect and join nervous systems with others safely), that we start to feel isolated, feelings of fear arise, anger and anxiety increase, or the need to consume more media to try to rationalize our experience into safety. This can be further emphasized if you have a history of trauma or attachment wounds, as these neuro-pathways may already be deeply embedded, awakening our implicit experiences and bringing them to the surface.
With our survival instincts on guard, implicit memories awakened and relational capacity muted, we may be triggered more easily, move into anger before compassion with loved ones, or generally disconnected with the emotional states of people we encounter in our daily lives. This is normal and adaptive and a sign that your nervous system is trying to keep you safe the best way it knows how. But it is also for this reason, that we need to be mindful of the ways in which we participate in cultural somatics and the ability for us to perpetuate systemic oppression within interpersonal relationships or within our justice movements, in times of trauma and stress.
Some examples of what may shift you out of relational capacity may already be in your awareness and extend beyond your activism or frontline work: witnessing suffering, violence or injustice (directly & indirectly), experiencing personal harms, or structural oppressions like racism & sexism. Some experiences may be more subtlety embedding: increased external stimuli — loud noises, flashing lights, crowds. Media consumption like scrolling apps, news/tv, radio (as information floods the brain it shifts into left brain processes to file), basic needs not being met- food insecurity, financial stress, isolation, or being around others/in relationship with those who are dis-regulated.
Restoring our relational capacity should be at the forefront of our activism and justice movements because within that lies our individual and collective resiliency. Becoming relational — meaning in connection with others and our bodies — is simply a way to shift our brains orienting from survival to safety. The beautiful thing about this is that when we restore our nervous systems social engagement system, we are able to share and extend that felt sense of safety (ventral vagal state) with others (co-regulation) which impacts our relationships and communities, widening the window of tolerance all around us.
There are many ways to do this, and the resources you call on may change from situation to situation. Coming back to embodiment and relational states is a practice and should be approached with an openness and curiosity as to what is called for in the moment. You likely already have tools and practices through your innate wisdom, as we are all wired for connection. I like to think of these practices as two categories although both categories are overlapping and guide your nervous system to the same end .
Relational practices — i.e. co-regulation & joining nervous systems with others to broaden your window of tolerance. These can be simple practices in your day to day interactions like being kind to others, making eye contact, smiling. Or more intentional practices like joined breathing exercises, physical touch and affection, hand holding, cuddling, joined pleasure & sex, eye gazing, dancing or movement with others, bodywork & acupuncture.
Embodied practices: i.e.- Connecting us to our felt sense of safety in our bodies. Sometimes this can be harder for folks, especially if there is a history of trauma. If that feels true for you, start first with relational practices, to expand your window of tolerance in the presence of a trusted other. From there, try tapping into moments of your felt sense of safety while in connection. Embodied practices might include movement exploration or exercise, dance, stretching, mindful body scans, breathing exercises, bodywork, acupuncture, self touch & self pleasure.
Coming back to relational states can help us build resiliency, resist burn out, restore optimism and make community care more accessible. It can be centred in joy and celebration. It can feel like the antidote to the grief and uncertainty of working within justice movements. Over time, I hope it can become more central to our movement work.
Year Of The Rat - Astrology Predictions For 2020
By Lillian Pearl Bridges
January 25, 2020 is the start of the Chinese Year of the White Rat (or Mouse). The Rat is the first animal in the Chinese Zodiac system and this is the beginning of a completely new 12-year and 60-year cycle and is therefore considered the beginning of a new era. It is also the start of another decade, all of which makes it an especially important year for new beginnings and new possibilities. It is time to bring out new ideas, new plans and say yes to new opportunities. It is a good year for reinvention and starting over.
Rats are considered mostly positive animals to the Chinese and are appreciated for their cleverness and the ability to always find food. People born in the Year of the Rat are considered charming, adaptable, witty and sociable. Rats favor their young, so this is a year of youth empowerment and reclaiming one’s youthful self. People will feel younger and livelier.
This is a Yang Water Year with Yang Metal on top. These two elements are considered compatible and harmonious, as the Metal Element feeds the Water Element in the Parent - Child cycle of the Five Elements. This means that there is the potential for a peaceable year. However, there is an underlying, hidden aggression that these two powerful Yang elements bring to the year that should not be ignored and may emerge if provoked.
Yang Metal is symbolic of the sword and military might. The Chinese believe that it requires many years of training to yield a sword properly and that a warrior must have the correct mental orientation to wield it judiciously. Expect to see a renewed emphasis from military and political leaders about important Metal values such as: honor; courage; duty; respect; service; loyalty and commitment. These ideals will be valued and appreciated in society as well. Having Yang Metal in the Rat Year indicates that there may be a gathering of troops in new places or the movement of troops, as the seeds of future conflict will likely be planted in the coming year.
Forging a sword is a difficult process requiring the use of fire - the forge, where metal is heated and hammered multiple times until it becomes the right shape. Then grinding, hardening, quenching and tempering are done repeatedly until a formidable weapon is formed with very sharp edges. Applying this metaphor to people, it means that those who have suffered in the past will see rewards for the character building they went through and the strength achieved from their previous pain and hardship. Those people who are willing to stand upright or “stand in the light of their own truth” without fear of
According to the legend, the Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride,
jumping off right before the finish line to come in first. The energies of this year will no
doubt inspire some of the tricksters and opportunists in society, so be wary of anything
that sounds too good to be true!
repercussion will be particularly respected and will shine. People who embody the strength of self that comes from overcoming obstacles and are resilient will emerge as heroes or social icons and gain large followings. They will be admired and appreciated for their resilience and integrity. Some will no doubt be athletes, as it is an Olympic year.
Yang Water is represented by the ocean, or large water, which also includes large lakes and large rivers. There is tremendous power in water this year and it is expected that there will be major flooding events caused by high tides, rising sea levels or larger than normal waves. Be prepared for saltwater intrusion into fresh water. Low lying coastal areas, particularly cities on the coast, will be very vulnerable to the flooding that comes from storm surges, possible tsunamis from large earthquakes, or from icebergs calving. There will be blizzards and rain events are likely to be deluges. It is anticipated that there will be more atmospheric rivers and large snow events will cause avalanches. Major rivers will also likely overflow their banks or lakes will rise, particularly near cities and flood expensive homes. Have your sandbags ready!
Yang Metal is the autumn and Yang Water is winter. This combination forecasts some very strong storms in these seasons. There will be extreme cold in many places; some that will be unused to such low, freezing temperatures. Because Metal and Water push into Wood in the Five Element Cycle, which in weather is Wind, you can expect some major windstorms, especially in the fall and this will also drive small water, which is rain and snow, making all the usual storms involving wind and water more Yang and therefore more dangerous. This will undoubtedly cause plane and car crashes due to the effects of severe weather conditions.
The strength in Water could also forecast some big social changes. There may be uprisings of like-minded people over important causes, like the start of the Civil Rights movement in the U.S. 60 years ago. Or there may be massive shifts in public opinion or in politics that ushers in a new, surprising leader, like John F. Kennedy, who was elected in the U.S. in 1960. You can expect to see large, primarily non-violent protests across countries, many of which are a continuation of last year’s protests. Violence is only forecast if the military gets involved in breaking up these demonstrations. These demonstrations will show governments how they can correct the course of their previously repressive and unfair policies.
You may see long-term politicians being voted out of office and replaced with younger, less conservative candidates. New ideas will spread like a tide across countries and previously separated people will come back together. My Chinese family has a saying that “all rivers will become one ocean,” and this is an appropriate truism for this year when all kinds of people will come together to create waves of change.
Many people will have become dismayed and even disgusted by the bad behavior of politicians and celebrities in the previous years. Many have become fed up with rude and crude behavior. There will be a call to return to more Metallic ideals of behavior and this year. People will want to lead by example, showing more civility, politeness and displaying manners again.
People will also demand more ethical business practices and will want people and businesses to uphold important values, act appropriately and take responsibility for their actions. There will be a strong desire to root out corruption and reward those companies that act ethically. Hypocrisy will not be tolerated this year and it may actually be dangerous this year for public figures to compromise their principles.
Unfortunately, this will also lead to many people proselytizing about morals, which will show up as rigidity that can feel oppressive and even argumentative, as they will be quite sure that they are right. However, the Metal Element is more about a code of virtuous behavior that is individual and will manifest as behaving with decency and moral courage. When people embody and live by their own values, they will attract others who believe and act in similar ways. Those who “take the high road” this year will be admired and rewarded.
However, in contrast to the more serious Metallic aspect of the year, the Rat brings vitality into popular culture and there will be a sense of youthfulness that has not been seen or felt in many years. Peach Blossom Luck, a Chinese term for charisma and charm will be abundant this year. These flowers, like Cherry Blossoms, are a symbol of renewal – the promise of spring after a long hard winter. It will manifest in people as a joie de vivre, lightness of spirit and in playfulness. Peach Luck will make people feel more flirtatious and it is a very good year for having more sex. Rats are also known for having lots of babies, so you will see an increase in pregnancies and multiple births, especially in families that already have children.
People will want to refine their image and dress in classic styles, or they will want to dress in more youthful styles, or in bohemian styles with flowing ethnic prints. Knit fabrics, silk and iridescent fabrics will also be valued. The colors of the year will be dark colors, primarily blue, blue-green or black for Water and the Metal colors of white, grey and pastels. Precious metal jewelry made of Gold and Platinum will be more popular and Pearls will become fashionable again. Beaded necklaces made by craftspeople from indigenous cultures will also be trendy.
Because White Rats are lab animals, you can expect to see a renewed interest and respect for science, especially involving laboratories. New discoveries are likely about both space and the deep sea. Allopathic Medicine is a metallic profession and there will be medical breakthroughs, especially involving pharmaceuticals. This is a good year for surgery, as the Metal Element enhances precision and there will be fewer medical mistakes. Acupuncture, which uses metal needles, is another profession that will see gains in the number of patients and gain popularity for more conditions. Natural and Ancient remedies of all kinds, especially from foreign countries can enhance healing and many Old Wives’ tales may be validated scientifically. The Water Element also adds strength to the fields of Psychology, Psychiatry and Philosophy and experts and the information these professionals present will be seen as valuable. People will want to go deep into their own psyches this year and they will be more willing to go into therapy.
Water is an element that wants clarity and therefore truth, so past deceptions and secrets will continue to rise up to be seen and deep personal process work can be
accomplished. Another interesting metaphor of 2020 implies that people will be able to “see” better and will have more clarity about what is true, especially regarding the past. This may also be literal, where vision improves in those who have vision problems.
The Year of the Rat is a very good year for improving health. People will feel more vital, alive and awake. Minor health issues can clear up easily and more serious or chronic illnesses can stabilize, as Yang Metal enhances the immune system and the Lungs. When people do get sick this year, they can recover quicker and easier. People will also heal from broken bones faster due to the strength of the Water Element.
People will want to take charge of their own health and there will a renewed focus on a healthier lifestyle, as the Metal Element increases the dedication to self-improvement. The Yang aspects of this year will make people want to exercise more in a natural way. Swimming, especially in saltwater pools or directly in the ocean is recommended and spending time in and around water will be very healing. Sleeping more is also recommended and insomnia should improve this year.
There may be problems with edema, i.e., water retention, this year, especially in the lungs. And people who are prone to blood thinning will have to watch for excessive bleeding and those with weak hearts may find their condition exacerbated by the lack of fire in this year. However, many people with Kidney or Lung diseases will be given respite, as these organs will be stronger overall this year.
The cold weather, wind and the viruses of the fall and winter seasons will lead to cold conditions in Chinese Medicine, like circulation problems in the extremities, arthritis and tightness in the neck and shoulders from Wind-Cold. This may also lead to bouts of dizziness and heart palpitations. Remedies involve warming the body, like taking baths or soaking your feet are good, and remember to wear gloves, hats and scarves. And this is a particularly good year for drinking hot beverages like Tea with Lemon and Honey and for taking distilled spirits medicinally, as in Hot Toddys or Hot Buttered Rum, or pouring Brandy into your Coffee. Chicken Broth, Bone Broth and Vegetable Broths are also good for enhancing the immune system.
The Earth Element is weak this year and unfortunately this may mean that some areas of the world will experience famine or food insecurity due to crop failures and weather related problems, such as flooding of fields. However, the Metal Element involves technology and this may help get food distributed when needed and even before it is needed, as computer modeling may be able to forecast the needs ahead of time.
This may also indicate that there will be problems with digestion for many people, especially with an increase in food intolerances. The Metal Element requires simple, fresh food and the savory and pungent flavors will be more popular than sweet. Ethnic food and recipes that have been handed down in families will also be more appreciated. Diets this year will be more omnivorous and flexitarian, due to the Rat energy and there will be a renewed interest in foraging. It is advised that people eat more warm food and cooked foods this year and foods that are easy to eat and digest. This includes soup, stews, yogurt, steamed foods and pureed foods.
Fire is still hidden underground, as mentioned earlier and will continue to cause earthquakes and volcanic eruption and fires that burn out of control as fire fights fire and there simply isn’t enough fire this year. It also means there will be power outages from storms. The Stock Market is expected to be a bit sluggish in terms of gains and less reactive to market pressures. People will be feeling less optimistic about the economy and may want to revert to safer and more secure investments. There will be a slow-down in economic growth for the next several years until the Fire Element reemerges in 2025.
The good news is that the Water Element is good for international trade between powerful countries and trading blocs. There will be more agreement between states, provinces and united countries, such as the EU. Organizations involving member nations will also return to power due to the strength of the Water Element, which enhances merging. So company mergers will also be given extra luck this year for succeeding. It is a good year for startups and for new ventures, especially in the technology sector and for getting a steady job. It is also a good year for accumulating personal wealth, especially if you are an Ox, Dragon or Monkey or have one of those animals in your Four Pillars.
The Power of the Ocean makes it a precarious place to be, so expect problems with
cargo ships, cruise ships and luxury yachts. It will be easier to capsize, be hit with rogue
waves, or to take on water. It will also be easy to be swept off piers, bridges and
breakwaters, so use extra caution around the sea. However, deep-sea exploration will be
benefitted by the energies of the year, with discoveries of ancient shipwrecks and
possibly finding new species in the depths of the ocean.
Important studies about climate change will emerge and will be taken more seriously, as
the sky and space are part of the Metal Element. Any manufacturing involving Metal is
benefitted this year. This includes the auto industry, the airplane industry, the steel
industry and even the mining industry when it involves mining for metals. And products
that involve distillation, like liquor, or vinegar, or flower essences, or tinctures to
chemicals, or water will flourish in both production and sales. It is also a good year for
the high tech industry.
The action of the Water Element is willfulness. It will be hard to talk people out of what
they want to do. They will also be more stubborn and intractable once they have made
up their mind. Only fear will move these people, as fear is the emotion associated with
the Water Element and the Kidneys.
People will also want to have stronger boundaries in interpersonal relationships and will feel more independent, due to the strength of Metal. There is a strong desire for personal freedom, equality and fairness. People will feel the
urge to be involved in social advocacy and this may manifest as the upwelling of renewed social movements and the desire to change the established order. Many revolutions had their start in a Rat Year. The Metal Element also adds the discriminating power of the intellect that will be activated in people. People will become more skeptical and less likely to follow others, preferring their own counsel about what they should think or how they should act.
Many people will need to check an enhanced need for perfection this year, but will probably enjoy creating more order and beauty in their lives and in their personal
environments. People will want to collect more ethnic artifacts, due to the Water Element and will want to buy quality, luxury items because of the Metal Element. It is recommended that people buy fresh flowers this year and to burn candles to enhance the Fire Element in their homes and offices. It is a good year for Feng Shui practitioners and for interior designers. The Water Element is about the upwelling of creativity so all creative people will be increasingly inspired. This will especially apply to writing, music, art, photography and graphic design. Refinement will be appreciated in the arts.
Many people will feel their ambition rise this year. But a realistic and somewhat skeptical appraisal of the steps necessary to accomplish goals will also be needed, as luck will be gained through discipline and consistency. This is also a good year for Higher Education and for people who hold advanced degrees. Significant life experience will also be more appreciated and the stories from elderly/older people will help younger people see the cycles within history. This will help alleviate some of the anxiety and stress of the last few years when events are seen in a bigger context. Wisdom will be much more appreciated and honored this year. Clairvoyance will also be enhanced this year and many people will gain insight through their dreams and in meditation.
There is an interesting dichotomy in the social aspect of this year. People may find themselves vacillating between being alone due to the Metal Element and to sometimes feeling too close to others from the Water Element. There will also be a desire to find time to think deeply about things and then a desire to share those thoughts with people that you trust. The Rat is a sociable creature, so be sure to make time for some enjoyable gatherings.
Overall it will be a very dynamic year. Mother Nature will be in charge and she will be temperamental, so be prepared by stocking emergency supplies in your homes, offices and cars and stay warm when the storms come. Luckily, many people will experience enhanced health and vitality and the winds of change will be blowing, altering the status quo for years to come!

*Rats, Rabbits and Horses will find this year to be more difficult, so they should carry an Ox charm for protection to bring more luck their way. But remember that this only means that they may have to: work harder; move; travel more; change jobs; start a new job; get married; or have a baby – the Chinese call it experiencing “Good Bad Luck.”

Self Care For Unsettling Times
Post Acupuncture Care
As a general rule - I don’t give patients a lot of home care or advice in between sessions.
Often patients come in during a busy day with a list of things to accomplish after their session, only to find they are totally zoned out (thanks to the release of oxytocin) and ready for bed after their session.Your nervous system has entered into a parasympathetic state during acupuncture (where the healing magic happens) so we want to take full advantage of our time spent here. My top suggestions for folks getting off the table are:
1. If you're feeling tired post acupuncture, listen to your body. Take a nap, or rest for the remainder of the day. Cancel the gym, the coffee date, the extra work you had planned on doing from home.
2. Try some sensorimotor exercises to help encourage neuroplasticity and stress resiliency. This is very important during initial stages of healing.
3. Spend time in nature. Nature helps to further co-regulate an overactive nervous system and even reduces cortisol(stress hormone), and inflammation in the body.
4. Drink water to help your body flush toxins and rehydrate tissues. No fancy supplements or meditations needed.
5. Come back soon-ish, acupuncture works best with repetition. It can take time to unwind holding patterns of stress, pain and chronic illness in the nervous system. Especially during initial and acute treatment, the body needs extra reminders to form new neurological pathways around feeling better.

Ten Ways Acupuncture Can Help With Pregnancy and Postpartum
Acupuncture has seen an increase in mainstream attention due to its potency and efficacy in treating fertility. However, not many people know just how useful it can be during pregnancy and post-partum. Acupuncture can treat a wide array of symptoms, prepare the body for labour and help speed up recovery postpartum. Below are my top 10 reasons to use acupuncture for maternity support:
1) Fatigue: you body is going through a lot of changes and using up all the energy and nutrients it can get to grow your baby. Acupuncture, and especially moxibustion, is a gentle and effective way to replenish vital energy stores, promote relaxation, and optimize digestion to ensure adequate nutrient absorption.
2) Morning sickness: In acupuncture theory we look at morning sickness as a disharmony in the energy flow between your stomach and uterus, which can have many causes depending on your individual picture of health. Acupuncture can quell nausea, stop vomiting and even reduce associated heartburn.
3) Emotions: acupuncture is great at balancing hormones and associated structural imbalances related to the HPA system. Which is a major cause of mood swings, depression and anxiety during pregnancy. Furthermore, in acupuncture theory, we recognize that old emotional wounds and traumas are stored in the meridians that pass through the diaphragm (pericardium) and encircles the hips (dai mai) — As baby grows and starts to put pressure on the tissues and fascia — old pains may emerge to be integrated before entering into the birth space. Acupuncture is great medicine for helping to release the tissues, support the nervous system in emotional processing and integrating energic shifts into the bodies felt sense of safety.
4) Turning breech baby: there is a growing body of research to support what many have done in china for thousands of years — acupuncture and moxibustion (on the toe!) to turn a breech baby into position for cervical engagement. Optimally this is done around 33 weeks.
5)Labour prep and cervical ripening: For this I recommend starting around 36–37 weeks on, to make sure the body is well adjusted for the birthing process. Acupuncture helps to loosen the ligaments and fascia around the hips and pelvis, and to promote cervical thinning and dilation needed as labour approaches. Starting early with cervical ripening treatments can also help to keep due dates on time and ease the body into induction treatments should one be needed.
6) Induction: Acupuncture is great at helping to induce labour! Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce oxytocin, one of the primary cascade hormones needed for labour onset. Further it helps to relax, calm anxiety and reduce labour pains.
6 cont.) Failure to progress & dilation: This is one way I love to use acupuncture but is often under utilized, as most birth attendants are not trained in acupuncture in Canada. Myself, I love to attend births and have seen the efficacy of acupuncture once labour has started (and stopped) in progressing contractions and increasing cervical dilation.
7)Post natal recovery: if you’ve had a baby chances are you are now exhausted. In the classical acupuncture texts we talk about « mother roasting » and « sitting the month » this is pretty much exactly as it sounds. Mama (or birth parent pronoun preferred) stays in bed for 4 weeks and is warmed sufficiently with nourishing meals, heat packs and lots of moxabustion and acupuncture! Rest is the key to recovery
8) Scarring and tears — While most do not want needles near a torn perineum, c-section wounds and scars can benefit greatly from acupuncture by speeding healing time, breaking up adhesions from scar tissue and reducing the size and appearance of wounds and scars. Take home moxa sticks are helpful for vaginal tears.
9) Milk supply: Insufficient lactation is a common problem. Especially in depleted birth givers and/or if there was significant loss of blood during labour. Some studies are now showing that consuming placenta could also be a contributing factor. Whatever the reason, acupuncture has a long history of usage with blocked milk suppply or insufficient lactation by balancing hormones, releasing tension from the nervous system and increasing circulation to the breasts.
10)Postpartum depression: Where acupuncture can be a literal life saver! Replenishing a depleted system, balancing hormones, nourishing an over stimulated nervous system, integrating emotional patterns triggered by new parenthood. Acupuncture is a safe and compassionate way to take care of yourself during the lows of post partum depression.
Nutritional Wisdom From Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional east Asian medicine, from which acupuncture was formed, comprises not only needle work but lifestyle, herbs and diet. As such it is important, when considering wholistic wellness, to take some nutritional precautions along with your prescribed acupuncture protocol. Below are the basic principals as a general guideline. If you wish to have a tailored nutritional protocol for your individual constitution, seek out the services of a qualified practitioner.
Thermal Natures of food: the classical TCM texts talk about the stomach as being a “100 degree soup”. Any food that we ingest needs to be warmed and preferably cooked as to not “cool down” the soup. Thus lowering body temperature, lowering metabolism and expending extra energy on digestive processes. Raw, iced and cool food - anything colder than room temperature - will injure the digestion and lead to imbalances such as gas, bloating, diarrhea, undigested food in stools, lassitude, fatigue and poor memory.
Many scientists link the ancient advancements of fire cooking food to the evolution of brain size and cognitive function. Even more interesting to note that studies are now showing that up to 50% of women on raw food diets develop amenorrhea - a sign that the body does not have enough energy to carry a pregnancy. Although there is a trend towards raw foods having higher nutrient density, cooking foods actually increases the bioavailability (what our body can break down to absorb) of those nutrients.
That is not to say never eat raw food, but in general it is good to eat in moderation and according to the season.
Energetics of food: Much like thermal natures of food, energetics of food is important for maintaining the “100 degree soup” needed for proper digestion. In general fruits and veggies are cooler in nature, grains and legumes are neutral, meats and spices are warming. Dairy, sugar, fried/greasy foods, wheat, and alcohol are all considered damp in nature. Of course there are many exceptions but this is the simplified way of looking at it. Cooking foods can change the energetic nature. For example steaming veggies will be considered more easily digestible than eating a salad. It is for this reason that vegans and vegetarians need to pay extra attention to their digestive energetics by adding warming spices and cooking foods thoroughly.
Seasonal eating: In this way of wholistic eating it is also important to consider the seasons and natural environment in which you live. External influences can also influence the “100 degree soup”. Living in colder, damp climates like we do on the west coast means we need to take extra precautions in the winter to eat warming foods and avoid damp ones. While during the summer heat it is suitable to eat fresh fruits and salads to balance the bodies warmer energies. As we consider our bodies are in constant relationship with the natural world, in general, whatever is growing fresh seasonally in your area are good choices for the body.
Individual constitution: Most importantly is to eat according to your individual constitution. This is where seeing a qualified practitioner can be very useful for customizing therapeutic food protocols. In general though, it is quite intuitive. If you are cold all the time, fatigued, lack energy/appetite, have weak digestion, gas, bloating and loose stools - it is best to eat warming foods, cooked thoroughly and moderately spiced. If you are hot or warm most of the time, anger easily, prone to headaches and neck tension, constipation, heartburn, insomnia and anxiety - its best to limit consumption of meats, spices, coffee, alcohol and greasy foods. If you are sluggish, foggy headed, prone to excess weight gain, have feelings of chest distention, experience acne, cysts, PCOS, you should avoid wheat, dairy, sugar, processed and greasy foods, alcohol and fatty meats.
Extra food for thought:
-Cultural eating practices are important! What your ancestors evolved eating will have an affect on your constitution and ability to assimilate nutrients.
-If prone to weak digestion, adding spices to your meals or drinking spiced teas after meals can help the break down and assimilation of nutrients and prevent bloating, gas, indigestion and loose stools.
-Adding quality ferments like water kefir, kraut, kimchi, Kombucha, and miso can help rebuild probiotics in the gut and intestines to aid in digestion.
-If digestion Is a chronic ailment I always recommend seeing a naturopath or family doctor for further testing of intestinal overgrowth (SIBO, candida), parasites, food allergies or thyroid/autoimmune conditions in addition to your acupuncture protocols.
How Acupuncture Checks Your Second Brain
Chinese Astrology for 2019
Year of the Brown Pig 2019
By Lillian Pearl Bridges
February 5, 2019 is the start of the Chinese Year of the Brown Pig. This is a Yin Earth Year with the Yin Water of the Pig below. This combination is a tricky one as the Elements are in opposition. Luckily, they are in the Yin form of the elements so any skirmishes or conflicts should be minor. The combination of Earth and Water together make mud, which is why this year’s Pig is brown! This can be taken literally, meaning that there will be more mud created in the natural world, or it indicates that there may be a lack of clarity in people’s thinking. Taken even further, it may be that there will be some mud-slinging politically – a messy proposition!
The Pig is the final animal of the Chinese 12 animal system. This means that many long-term projects, ongoing investigations or delayed lawsuits will be finalized. There is a lot of energy around completion and concluding things that can’t make the jump into the next cycle. Pigs are peaceful animals, except when angered, which is rare. To the Chinese, Pigs symbolize the values of family, friends, home and good food. In fact, the pictogram for home is a roof with a pig under it. So plan on being more of a homebody or staying closer to home this year, as that will bring more fortune than traveling around.
The Yin Water of this year is embodied by what is called small water – clouds, mist and rain - especially consistent rain over a long period of time. As rain feeds the streams and then the rivers, it is easy for two rivers to join and cause the water level to rise. This indicates the dangers of flooding over low-lying ground in many places in the world. The rivers run to the sea, which in large quantities carries mud that clouds the water. Unfortunately, this water runoff can cause pollution, increased bacterial levels and algae growth, which impacts sea creatures and animals as well as tourism, fishing and shellfish farming.
The symbolism of muddy water also means that there may be oil spills or problems with water quality and the safety of water supplies in many places. Water borne illnesses may be the catalyst for action. Clean water will become a major governmental issue with more money being dedicated to water safety, clean water distribution and replacing and repairing aging water infrastructures.
Marshes and swamps will increase in size. Lakes, reservoirs and some major dams, levees or dikes may be breached or overflow, and soil or sand erosion is expected. Water supplies can increase if steps are taken to retain the water.
As for natural disasters, volcanoes and earthquakes will calm down, although they will still be a factor on a lesser scale. Earth is on an unstable foundation, so landslides are definitely predicted, especially in burn areas and in arid places that are not used to an increase in rainfall. Flash floods can be a problem and may cause washouts of roads and bridges. Water always seeks to go down, so expect that caves, mines, and tunnels will flood and basements will flood. Bogs and quicksand may become an issue in some places and sinkholes may also become more prevalent. There may be problems with buildings built on unstable Earth that will create problems with the foundation sinking, the building tilting and some may possibly collapse.
Storms should be less intense this year, with storm surges as the bigger threat along with sand and soil erosion. There will be bands of weather across large areas that stay put for long periods. There will be more drizzle and more socked- in fog, which may cause car crashes. And, there will also be a lot of sea mist, which may cause some problems with shipping. Some areas will experience freezing fog and sleet rather than major snowstorms. Be careful and cautious while traveling in the winter months, as there may be an increase in icy sidewalks, black ice on roads and frozen bridges. In summer months, there will be an increase in humidity, even in places that don’t usually experience it. The lack of fire in this year means that this may overload the electrical grid and cause outages.
Farming is actually benefitted due to Yin Earth, except where flooding occurs. Crops requiring a lot of water will flourish. These include: rice; cotton; legumes; wheat; alfalfa; sugarcane; lettuce; cruciferous vegetables; and almonds. Livestock - all farm animals - will have more than enough water this year, which they need. Grass will flourish and will feed range and migrating animals, so there will an increase in offspring. Yin Water nourishes Yin Earth and makes things grow. There should be a bumper crops in fruits and vegetables and there will be a renewed increase in biodynamic and organic farming.
Water has a cycle: evaporation of water makes clouds; then clouds make rain fall which makes streams flow to rivers; and rivers flow to lakes and oceans; eventually evaporating again. The Yin Earth cycle makes everything grow and is symbolic of the soil, which nourishes plants that feed insects and animals and composts to create more fertile earth. Both elements are involved with recycling, especially of organic material. This will give a big boost to the recycling industry and scientists will find new ways of dealing with or processing food waste and trash as well as water reclamation.
Governments will pay more attention to the internal workings and policies of their countries. States or Provinces will have more influence on their populace then the central government and representatives of these regions will have a strong
impact on legislation. Countries will be less focused on relationships with other nations or with foreign affairs. There will be withdrawals from occupied or foreign territories and past differences can more easily be resolved. Negotiations, treaties, agreements and alliances between countries will be given blessings from the Pig Year. Changes in command or government positions will be smoother and more peaceful than usual.
Internationally, most relationships should be harmonious and amicable. If heads of government or politicians choose to fight with others, they will find that they will be more evenly matched this year and will not be able to dominate as they have in the past. Resistance will meet an equal resistance. This can lead to impasses where both sides need to lower their expectations considerably in order to compromise and find solutions. Incremental gains and small wins will be much easier to achieve this year.
It is not expected to be a good year for the Stock Market and it looks to become decidedly Bearish. This is due to Fire being trapped inside Earth and put out by Water. The stock market’s volatility is considered fiery and there is a dampening energy on market growth. Risky investments or investing for quick profits is not advised. Investors will be feeling less optimistic and more fearful, so more conservative investment strategies will become more popular and more comfortable for investors. It is a time to hold onto your money and for the first time in a long time, savings accounts may do better than many investments.
Overall this is a good year for business because both the Earth and Water Elements feed the Wood Element that business runs on. However the Chinese saying is that “Businesses should plan in the Pig Year and launch new projects and expand in the Rat Year”, which is in 2020. Home building, publishing, environmental/ecology industries and businesses based on natural sciences should all have good years. Earth Businesses, like Real Estate home sales and all businesses involving Food will get a boost: food growing, production, distribution, preparation, and sales will also have a good year. Farm to Table restaurants and family dining restaurants will do best. Beauty products and spa treatments using mud, clay, seaweed or stones will be very popular. Partnerships and businesses working together and joining forces will become stronger and gain mutual benefit.
The energy of the Pig will make Education-related businesses flourish, particularly involving children and children’s educational toys. The Pig also benefits all professions involving caring – healing, therapy, counseling and social work. Charities and nonprofits that focus on the welfare of children and the disenfranchised, as well as shelters for the homeless and feeding the hungry will receive more donations and gain more volunteers. This is definitely not a year to flaunt money, power, status or conspicuous. Generosity will be one of the themes of the year and people will be more inclined to help others less fortunate.
This is a year for cultivating all domestic skills – cooking, scrapbooking, housekeeping and gardening and these skills can more easily be made into
professions this year. People who practice these crafts will be more appreciated and those who work in support positions, such as all assistants or those working on assembly lines in manufacturing, will get more credit.
One of the curious aspects of the elements of this year is that they are both Yin – Yin Earth and Yin Water. Because both the Earth and the Water Elements are also considered more Yin, it is almost like having a quadruple Yin year. Yin and Yang are often misconstrued as opposites, but they are actually interdependent and can transform to become the other, as each carries the seed of the other within. In Chinese Medicine, men are said to be Yang on the outside and Yin on the inside, whereas women are said to be Yin on the outside and Yang on the inside. So everyone certainly has both Yin and Yang characteristics. However, most societies have been incredibly Yang-focused for a very long time and that balance is about to change.
This points to the rising power of Yin in 2019, and it is important to find strength in a Yin way, not in a confrontational Yang way, particularly for women. There will also be an expectation for men to express more of their Yin nature. Men need to be brave enough to start exploring their inner selves and bring forward more Yin actions, like compassion. This is a year of focusing on family, friends and community.
The Yin issues are important this year and improvements in these areas of life can and will be made legislatively and as movements. This involves things like: birth control; pregnancy; parental leave; childcare; children’s health; women’s health; family health; and eldercare. The previously disenfranchised will gain more rights. This includes: women’s rights, gay rights; and children’s rights too. The silent minorities will find their voices and be heard. Expect to have more spokeswomen emerging to fight for these causes, not just against men in power or the current system. Educating children will become a priority and other social causes, such as feeding the hungry, housing the homeless and caring for refugees, particularly child refugees, will become rallying causes.
Aggression and violence will not be tolerated this year and strides will be made in creating systems or passing legislation to deal more effectively with these societal problems. This is not a year for holding grudges or plotting revenge. These energies will not be appreciated or allowed and will bring rebukes and ostracism and censure. Conciliatory words and soothing tones of voice are advised in communication for harmonious interactions. People will feel much more Pro-Peace and will find it easier to cooperate and compromise.
The energies of this Pig Year will also encourage retirement in those that are close to retirement age, as the Pig values the reward for working hard and the relaxation and rest that comes at the end of effort. This coincides with the peak of the Baby Boomer generation who are reaching retirement age. So if you are not retiring this year, you may find yourself wanting to retire. Be sure to dedicate more time to rest and relaxation and vacations this year.
People will be very interested in food this year and the theme is that food must taste good. They will be less concerned about the calories or the nutrients and more focused on flavor. People will be cooking more; gathering and eating together more. They will cook family recipes and from their heritage. Comfort foods will bring pleasure. It is important to eat more cooked foods this year instead of so many raw foods. Fruits and Root Vegetables and Pulses all belong to the Earth Element and will be very nourishing this year. Yin Earth is also lightly sweet foods or sweets eaten in small quantities, so small pastries, light desserts, and creamy custards will be popular and consumed more than dense heavy desserts.
Weight gain is very likely this year, especially around the stomach. But it will occur in small increments and may not be noticed until the end of the year. This might also occur because people will be drawn to wearing comfortable, oversized clothing that drapes and hides weight gain well. Because the Pig energy can be somewhat sedentary, light exercise, particularly bouncing with rebounders and Shaking Qi Gong is recommended for moving the lymph fluid. Massages, including Lymph Massage or Bodywork will help alleviate tension and enhance relaxation. Calisthenics and stretching like Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi are also good and taking frequent strolls will be enjoyable forms of exercise. People will also be drawn to group exercise and exercise classes, instead of individual training.
The combination of Earth and Water signifies Spleen Dampness in Chinese Medicine. To counterbalance this dampness, saunas can be helpful. This dampness can manifest as problems with the Spleen, Pancreas and Stomach, which are Earth organs. This may cause digestive disorders, so warm, cooked foods are recommended to ease digestive distress. It is also advised to add Ginger to the diet to aid digestion and for warming the stomach, along with more spices like Cardamom and Cinnamon, and hot drinks. Soups and stews are also good. It is very important to eat very regular meals. However, people won’t be able to resist snacking this year.
The lack of fire makes circulation problems increase and there is slightly more risk of heart failure and small blood clots, hemorrhoids and varicose veins due to stagnant and thicker blood. Giving blood helps alleviate these conditions and some foods are considered very good for improving blood quality. These include Mu’er (Wood Ear) Mushrooms and red fruits that look like hearts, like Cherries, which in Chinese Medicine is said to clean the blood.
The combination of elements symbolized as muddy water can also affect the Kidneys and Bladder. This can manifest as more Urinary Tract Infections, which make the urine cloudy (Blueberries can be helpful). Or, there may be an increase in small kidney stones (Watermelon juice can be helpful). It is unfortunately easier for Kidneys to fail, requiring dialysis or even transplants. Kidney deficiency may also manifest as lethargy, low back problems, teeth problems, knee problems or as a low sex drive. Be sure to rest and sleep more to support your
Kidneys. Interestingly, although people may not be having as much sex this year, they will likely be much more fertile and many babies will be conceived.
Phlegm is another manifestation of muddy water, so the number of people who fall ill with respiratory infections is expected to rise, with congestion lasting longer than usual. If you find yourself suffering from congestion, cook more Chicken Soup with Garlic, Ginger, Green Onions and Cayenne Pepper and drink hot Water with Lemon and Honey – a shot of whiskey makes it even better!
People will want to stay at home more because the Pig is considered a home- loving and family-oriented creature and they value comfort. There will be a strong pull to gather together with family, friends and workmates often. It is a good year to spoil children and grandchildren. The Yin nature of the year may bother a lot of people, but it will balance out their Yang natures. Take naps and spend more time just being. The idea is to relax and enjoy life in the Pig Year and spend time with loved ones.
People will be more caring, considerate and nurturing this year, and more willing to help others. This is a very good year for dealing with family issues and overcoming previous hurts. Forgiveness is easier and reconciliation is one of the themes of the year. People will take romance seriously and there are likely to be more proposals. It is not a good year to play with someone’s heart or engage in superficial relationships.
The Pig is considered an honest creature, so truth will be valued. However, muddy water means that things won’t always be that clear. People will be a bit more confused and hidden danger will not necessarily be easy to see. Those who attempt deception must be very good at keeping secrets as water is always trying to become clear. So this year, their deceptions will likely not be as hidden as they think or won’t stay hidden as long.
The downward push of Earth into Water makes mud, but then rises up to dry in the sun. This means what’s been hidden below must come out. So, past venial sins will rise up to be remembered and will need to be cleansed and consciences cleared. Therapists and ministers will be busier counseling, and Catholic churches will see more people seeking confession. These sins may also be revealed to the world but anonymously or in confidence and those who prey on Yin people will be found out, as Yang does not have as much power this year.
Emotionally, people will feel more worried and more fearful, but can be consoled easily by their loved ones. Most people will feel like hugging and cuddling more. They will feel more affectionate and less angry. Confrontations should be easy to diffuse and patience will help. It is easier to feel a connection to others and it is easier to make friends. The main goal is contentment and enjoyment of life – resting and healing to prepare for the new cycle.
Overall, the Pig brings gifts to most people this year. Tigers, Rabbits and Sheep get particular benefit, but any barnyard animal is favored. Snakes, Monkeys and
Pigs (except those celebrating their 60th birthday) will find this year more difficult. This means that they may have to work harder, move, travel more, change jobs, start a new job, get married or have a baby – the Chinese call it experiencing “Good Bad Luck.” The remedy is to carry a Tiger Charm.

Autumn Wellness
In Acupuncture theory, fall all is the season that effects the lungs and large intestine organs. Somatically the lungs relate to general lung health, immunity, skin, and the emotions of grief and sadness. The large intestine relates to the bodies detox pathways, digestion and excretion. This time of year is common to see a flare in colds & flus, dry skin and hair, eczema and skin complaints, asthma, seasonal depression/ SAD, and constipation. As the nights get longer and the energy of the natural world moves inwards, we welcome more rest and a return to routine and self care. Nutritionally, it's a good time to start adding more warming spices, root vegetables, and cooked meals such as soups and stews to attune your body to the season and nourish you through the darker months.
Acupuncture for Anxiety and Insomnia
Summer is the season on the heart organ in acupuncture theory and imbalances related to the heart such as anxiety and insomnia can often flair up this time of year. Acupuncture is great medicine for this as it works fundamentally on the nervous system. As needles gently activate certain acupuncture points, the body is guided from the sympathetic nervous response of fight or flight (which most of us step into daily) to a parasympathetic state of rest and digest. Once the body feels safe enough to relax, we can come back into embodiment, our minds become calm and our natural healing processes can take over. Further, studies have shown that acupuncture floods the body with oxytocin - the feel good brain chemical that we get from intimacy and connection. Increased levels of oxytocin provides an immediate feeling of relaxation and ease before you’ve even left the treatment room and carries into the evening for a peaceful nights rest.
Study Shows Acupuncture More Effective for Migraines Than Pharmaceuticals
A study published last year shows evidence that acupuncture is more effective at treating chronic migraines with fewer side effects than both pharmaceutical drugs and botox. Participants who received 30 treatments over a 3 month period reported an overall decrease of severity of pain, frequency of migraines and need for medication compared to control groups.
With all the talk of new pharmaceuticals for migraine prevention being approved by the FDA this week, perhaps here in Victoria we could take a more holistic approach. The article also highlights the importance of acupuncture frequency to achieve optimal results. While getting regular acupuncture may take a bit more effort than taking a pill, the study also shows that the acupuncture group had far fewer adverse effects to treatment.
